Crusaders manager Declan Caddell has expressed his delight with the performance of new signing Owen Wardell, who made an immediate impact in the team's opening match of the 2026-27 season. Wardell, who joined from BE1 National Football Academy in Lithuania, scored the winning goal against Ballymena United, helping Crusaders to a 2-1 victory at Seaview. Caddell described Wardell as 'outstanding' and 'man of the match,' highlighting his versatility and confidence on the field. The manager noted Wardell's ability to cross the ball effectively, noting that he had tested the Ballymena defense with 20 crosses during the game.
'Our front three were excellent, but Owen has stood out. He has no fear, is a bag of tricks, and he can go right and left,' Caddell said. 'The first goal came from his cross, and I think he put 20 of them in against Ballymena and tested them. I am delighted for him.'
The victory was particularly sweet for Crusaders, who narrowly avoided relegation the previous season, securing their Premiership status only after defeating Annagh United in the promotion/relegation play-off. Caddell emphasized the importance of making Seaview 'a fortress' as the team aims for a more comfortable season. 'Results last year were no near enough good enough,' Caddell stated. 'We talked a lot in preseason and before the game about making Seaview a fortress again and not giving up. It is nice, especially for the home fans after the disappointment of last year to get the three points on the board.'
